Sylvia Ikomi's PhD research focusses on the adultification of Black girls in state care. She is a researcher, lecturer and teacher.

Brief

Ms. Ikomi came to us to style her soon-to-be published paper on the “Adultification of Black Girls in State Care: Perspectives“, which she was researching as a Churchill Foundation Fellow.

Challenge

The nature of the report was serious; as it centred around the adultification of Black girls in general, particularly those who are in state (foster) care.  It also focussed on the police killing of young girl in state care in the United States.

It was for this reason, we needed to choose a colour scheme and aesthetic that was muted, but still easy-to-read and modern.

Final Result

We were able to style Ms. Ikomi’s report in with muted greens to convey the seriousness of the topic, as well as bring in some high-contrast white for the text and a subdued yellow for a lighter colour, perhaps suggesting a glimpse of hope for a serious issue facing Black girls in the countries described.

We highlighted requested quotations from the report to stand out in yellow boxes with large quotation marks.

We created an easy-to-read table within the report to highlight facts.
